Sthenoteuthis pteropus is native to the tropical Atlantic Ocean with a range between about 35°N and 36°S and a rather more restricted breeding range that extends to about 22° on either side of the equator. It is a common epipelagic species and is found in the upper surface layers of the sea to a depth of 200 m (656 ft).
The diet of Sthenoteuthis pteropus consisted mainly of myctophid fishes, which is also the main prey item of many other ocean squids including gonatids [ 55] and ommastrephids [ 56, 57 ]. A total of 30 different myctophid species were found in the stomachs of S. pteropus, but Myctophum asperum and M. nitidulum dominated.
However, during their lifetime ∂ 13 C values fluctuated substantially in all individuals and increased significantly after 20 cm GL. Sthenoteuthis pteropus spawns in the eastern equatorial Atlantic and its early life stages are quickly dispersed in the equatorial zone [ 17, 19 ].
